Education VS Experience

Once I started researching this topic I was amazed at how little information there was.  Most of the information I did find, was written by home-schoolers trying to justify their position.   Now, I do not necessarily disagree with home schooling, I have a very dear friend that home schools her children.  I do have concerns on the social growth of home schooled children, but that is not for me to worry about… it is for their home schooling parents/teachers.

I did find an enlightening article written by one home school advocate that actually breaks-down the economic benefits of home schooling.   It does in a very one sided, biased view offer a slight look into the salary of a non-college bound student.  For that it helps with my research. Mark writes a great article called Economics 101: College vs. Apprenticeship.  In this he states, “Let’s compare the costs and income for two different situations of your typical college age student – Mr. Worker works at an entry level job full time while Mr. Student attends university full time in the fall and spring while working at an entry level job for 3 months in the summer.”

He goes on to elaborate, “Mr. Worker is an apprentice in a trade and nets $10 an hour*, 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, so averages $20,000 income each year. Mr. Student makes $10 an hour, 40 hours a week, 12 to 13 weeks a year so averages $5,000 income each year.

Mr. Student’s parents pay an average $583 each month for 4 years for a total of $28,000 for his 4 years at the university. Mr. Worker’s parents contribute $583 month to a typical mutual fund account averaging an 8% annual return (8% is a low estimate of the average long term annual gain for a low risk U.S. mutual fund). At the end of the 4 years, the total value of these monthly payments is 0 for Mr. Student (the college has it all) and $33,000 for Mr. Worker (amount contributed each month plus interest).

Since Mr. Worker is living at home, he saves all his income in a typical mutual fund account averaging an 8% annual return. Saving $1666 a month for 4 years in the account results in a balance of $94,000. Mr. Student saves his 3 months of income each year (which is 1/4 of Mr. Worker’s) in an equivalent account with an 8% annual return, which results in a balance of $24,000. Note that in both cases the parents are paying all living expenses and they are assumed to be the same.

So at the end of 4 years, Mr. Student has a college degree and $24,000 in cash, while Mr. Worker has 4 years experience in his trade plus $127,000 in cash (his income plus his parent’s contribution). Both students move out of their parents’ home and begin their career using what they’ve learned in 4 years. They keep their cash in the investment accounts earning an average of 8% annually. Mr. Student has $103,000 less money than Mr. Worker. He must earn more than Mr. Worker does in order to catch up and surpass him. How much more and for how long?

The $103,000 growing at 8% annually grows to $229,000 in 10 years. If Mr. Student saves an extra $1,250 each month (in the 8% account), he will reach the $229,000 in 10 years. $1,250 monthly is $15,000 a year, so if Mr. Student’s after-tax salary exceeds Mr. Worker’s by 15,000 each year then Mr. Student is better off financially.  Note that Mr. Student will likely be in the 25% tax bracket, so he must earn $20,000 extra, before taxes, to net the $15,000 to save and invest.”

Read the entire article by clicking here.

Now though it does in some way, successfully breakdown the economics of the two students lives, it does not look long term.  While reading this I actually asked myself why someone would want to go to college.  If they just do as it is said here they would be fine, have money and a great retirement.  Then I ask, “What 18 year old lives at home banking every cent they have and reporting to mommy and daddy?”  What about later in life when they enter their 30′s and have a family to support?  How do they fair when someone fresh out of college is in line for the same job, and asking for less money?  Well, then…they end up unemployed.

Unless they find a manager that takes their experience into account.  I was always one of those managers.  I valued each person on what they could bring to the table, not how much education they had.  Coming from an era that valued the hard work involved to learn and work your way up to the top I too valued someone that was self taught, hard working and had a diverse background.  I found that they, at times, brought more to the table then the fresh new hire out of college with only one perspective.

I think that more people should take this into account before they hire.  In this job market employers are demanding higher education for less money, but lost in the shuffle are the over employable.  The ones that are told, “I am sorry but you are over qualified” ,  based not on their degree but their experience.

This is a resource that is under utilized in the job markets today…and quite frankly a reason why there is an issue with customer satisfaction.  Gone are the days of people caring about their jobs, taking pride in their work and working hard for their money.  The “old timers”  that have had to scrape their way to the top have learned of the pride associated with that hard work, and that in turn translated to their clients and client satisfaction.

My marketing advice for this month… find the untapped resource available to you, and set it free!  Show it the way to success and watch your company prosper.   Look at the why’s and not the how’s, this will bring you the greatest growth.

  5. Search Googles blog, and research the new applications and how they work.
  6. How to keep your blog fresh.
  7. How to drive traffic to your website.
  8. Youtube videos on your products or business.  ( This actually keeps things light, and fun when you have no idea what to write about.)
  9. Funny interactive programs like JibJab that make people want to come back.
  10. WordPress, and WordPress plugins that I love and why.
  11. Media topics that need more coverage.
  12. Blog posts versus pages.
  13. When is free better.  Do you really get what you pay for, or is open source the wave of the future.
  14. What challenges are my potential customers facing. Do I have any advice for them?
  15. How to built a community.
  16. How to get parents more involved with their children.

  22. How to effectively use visual aids.
  23. Post Photos
  24. Recommendations

Spoiled Puppies Everywhere Get Ready…….

The holiday season is fast upon us.  As I sit and make my list, checking it twice, I find there are a few items I have to add…and a few I will go without!

What little baby could go without a “First Christmas” sweater?  Not mine!

My little boy will be sporting this little number from Posh Puppy, his favorite store.  No Walmart puppy clothes for my spoiled baby.  Leave that to the ghetto dogs from the other side of Massachusetts.

.

While picking out his holiday fashions, Kymber’s Fenway Pride and I,  found the most amazing discovery at Posh Puppy.  Now I admit, I browse through the Louis Dog collection.   I stop and admire the PIMA cotton sweater for 92.00 , and slowly move along.

There isn’t much I would deny my boy, but truth be told…my wife would kill me.   It took a long time for me to make her understand that the reason little Fenway needed clothing was to actually keep him warm.  Then he shivered on her head one night, and he has been a Snuggie dog wearer ever since.  By the way, they are now on sale for 7.99!

I also admit that Fenway is a dandy, and damn proud of it.   He loved his bow tie for Gay pride, and walked with his head up in his little matching pink shirt.

.

I do however draw the line at some things.  That would be a 15 carat diamond collar.  Oh, yes, boys and girls.  A 15 carat puppy collar.  For those of you that have 150,000.00 expendable income in this economy, GREAT!!!!!!!!  Order one for me too!  They are amazing!

Over 180 certified diamonds, custom set, in a beautiful collar to shine, sparkle and show off the most beloved of puppy eyes.

Click here to visit the site.

Tell them Kymber sent you and that we love it there!

Then take a trip back to reality and look at their sale sections, with me.

Fenway may not have a 15 carat collar but you will be hard pressed to find a more spoiled baby.  He, as well as his brother and sister, have the market cornered…without a diamond collar.  They are spoiled with love…………..

NCP Girls battle back to take 2nd at CMPW Cheer Competition.

I have had a few people, not from the Gardner area, ask to see the article I submitted for NCP to the Gardner News.  Since I wrote it, I can also put it here for you to see if you live out of state.

They made a few small changes, to change the narrative it was written in, but that’s all.

Read below:

In the same year that it was debated whether cheerleading is a sport or an activity, the North County Panthers Cheerleading squads take to the mats with their 2010 program and answer yes, we are athletes!  With first year Cheer Director Jill Markley at the helm, the groups had a chance to “Bring It On”?last weekend at the Central Mass Pop Warner Cheer Competition held at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Ma. Teams from NCP competed in two different divisions, grabbing a stunning second place in each division.  There is an old cheer quote that says, “What does it take to be a champion?  Give me 2 minutes and 30 seconds and I will show you!”  Do you have 5 minutes?  That is what you will need, because the NCP girls have done it twice!

Both the NCP Jr. Pee Wee Cheer Squad and the NCP Jr. Midget Cheer Squad came back after weeks of hard work, many set backs, and enormous obstacles to place 2nd and win their bid to the Pop Warner Regional Qualifiers.  The experience was a new one for the cheerleaders, who had a more technical and difficult routine this year after transitioning to a more competitive, year round cheer program.  The coaching staff worked tirelessly to bring these  teams together and make the girls believe in themselves.   After taking second place, one of the veteran cheerleaders exclaimed, “This is what it feels like to win!”, after many seasons of finishing at the bottom.  The squads performed a two and a half minute routine comprised of significant tumbling, stunting, dance and cheer.  The teams could not have been more nervous going into the competition on Sunday, but the girls handled it with grace.  The coaching staff for both teams could not have been prouder or happier for the girls.  Championships are won at practice, and these girls gave it all!

All of our NCP cheer teams worked hard and showed great improvement this year.  Going into the season, that was the goal of the entire NCP cheer coaching staff – have the girls show improvement and HAVE FUN!  All of our teams achieved that goal, and made us very proud as coaches.

Our next step?  Regional Qualifiers on November 7th at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Both teams will need to qualify to compete in Regionals later in the season.  Good luck to both teams!  Win or lose, this season was a huge success, with achievements made for both the cheer program and the cheerleaders.  We will be rooting for you!!

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Welcome!  Have we met before??  If not, welcome to Kymberstyle! My name is Kymber and I started Kymberstyle a few years ago after many people said to me, everything you do has a flair and style… like a Kymberstyle!  I have many interests, but my passions are my children.  If you look up beautiful in the dictionary, it has pictures of my little babies.

I say little, Laugh, well my oldest is turning 15 next week and my youngest is 10.  Each have their own flair.  My oldest is a National Champion Cheerleader.  We will be traveling soon to watch her compete in the US Finals.  I am sure I will be racking up the blogging points with pictures and videos.  My youngest, who I feel is to young to put pictures of her on my blog, is a budding basketball player who recently received the coaches award for excellence.   Both are honor roll students, and are very active in their schools and communities.  The oldest will also be coaching younger cheerleaders for Pop Warner this year.

As you can see I can not stop bragging!

I also have an amazing wife.  Yes, I said wife.  Now stop staring!  We are the lesbian couple in our town.  Little, quiet, out in the middle of nowhere Massachusetts has never been the same.  No, we didn’t move here because gay marriage was legal….. my wife already lived here.   We are both professionals, and I like to say I am a spoiled engineers wife.  Yay me!

I run a few websites, some I own… some I own for other organizations and donate them.  My main website is of course Kymber style,  I am currently designing and working on Cheeritude.com (  When you have attitude in cheering, because your the best, show it!  It’s not attitude it’s cheeritude!), I maintain Oakmont Pop Warner and donate my time and the website for Youth Football and Cheerleading.  I am also a coach for Oakmont Pop Warner.  As you can see youth sports has become very important to me.  It teaches discipline, skills on team work, skills to learn how to deal with responsibility and stress, skills to learn how to handle authority figures, health and fitness…. and so much more.

Other website I donate my time to:

Waters Works, AL Waters has issued a challenge.  He will ride a bike, not a motorcycle 192 miles in 2 days to raise money for the Pan Mass Challenge, he just needs you to donate!

Juliasavesdogs.com, Julia is a dedicated animal activist.  She donates all of her time saving animals from kill shelters and finding them wonderful homes.  I owe both of my babies to her!

Chestnut Street Cafe,  Located in Downtown Providence, RI the Chestnut Street Cafe is a wonderful place to grab a bite and relax.

Dog Blessed, Brenda was also a Fairy Dog Mother for my babies and works hard to support animal relocation.  An avid activist against animal abuse, Brenda donates all of her time housing and transporting animals across the US.

And finally Gay Online News, a one stop online news source for the gay community.  this website is actually going through a revamping, and going in a new direction.  Come back to see where it goes!

5 Minutes for Mom has asked us to list the prizes we’d like to win, so here’s my list.

  1. I’d L O V E to win this new laptop.
  2. Target – need I say more?
  3. $20 visa gift card
  4. Stay free at Hilton!!
  5. Amazon!

Well that is Kymber and Kymberstyle in a nutshell.   Come back soon, there is always something happening!
