Most of my readers know I am a huge NFL fan. I am a huge Dolphins fan, and have been since childhood. I sit back and take everything the NFL does with a grain of salt. When they started making games only visible on the NFL station to make more money, I bought the NFL station. I spend endless amounts of money of Dolphins swag for myself, Patriots swag for my loving wife and Steelers swag for my daughter. All without a complaint, or even batting an eye.
So why am I writing now? I was sickened by the warm welcome the NFL, fans and announcers gave Michael Vick upon returning this weekend. I am all for doing your time and starting over, but I am also for losing your job when you do not honor a code of ethics. Michael Vick was a role model. Thousands of little boys looked up to him, and wanted to be him. They wanted to act exactly like him. They wanted to dress like him. Eat what he eats. Drink what he drinks. AND do exactly what he did!
Now when this role model turns out to be a monster, a murderer, even a mass murderer, it is not above them realm of reason to think he may not get his job back in a private organization that stands for morals and honor. I understand most people think about what he did as horrible, but they also think about it as they were just dogs. They were not just dogs. They were lives. They were living, breathing lives that he would put into cages and then train them to tear each other apart piece by bloody piece. When a dog would not perform or lose, he would snap their neck. Just like the monster he was, or was that him being humane.
Dogfighting is a sadistic “contest” in which two dogs—specifically bred, conditioned, and trained to fight—are placed in a pit (generally a small arena enclosed by plywood walls) to fight each other for the spectators’ entertainment and gambling. Fights average nearly an hour in length and often last more than two hours. Dogfights end when one of the dogs will not or cannot continue.
Where in this is there a role model? Where does the time he served in jail erase the lives he extinguished by snapping necks and letting someone be ripped alive by teeth and fangs? Has anyone even considered what is wrong with him in the first place to make him think this was even remotely okay?
I understand he did his time. Now that he served his time, he should go out and get a job where children are NOT looking up to him and getting the impression that if your Michael Vick you can murder animals, go to jail and then go back to being a role model making millions. OR go on the road Michael Vick, don’t play football. Dedicate your time to speaking to the youth of America, tell them what you did and WHY it is wrong! OR do you not think you were wrong? Do you still think we owe it to you to praise and worship the mighty Michael Vick?
Well, I wont. I actually think someone should put you in a cage with one of the dogs you trained, and starved so they would fight, and leave you there.
I looked for a photo to add to this article, but could not bring myself to do it. If you truly want to see the monster he is, try Google-ing images of Michael Vick and dog fighting, just make sure you have a strong stomach. There are actual pictures of his dogs, and what he did to them.
Dear NFL, I feel betrayed. I feel you pick and choose what you stand for, and I feel sorry for you that making money is all that matters. Grow a set, and do what is right!
