Google Adds Stars and Makes Searching More Personal.

We’ve long believed that personalization makes search more relevant and fun. For nearly five years, we’ve been tailoring results with personalized search. Today we’re announcing a new feature in search that makes it easier for you to mark and rediscover your favorite web content — stars.

With stars, you can simply click the star marker on any search result or map and the next time you perform a search, that item will appear in a special list right at the top of your results when relevant. That means if you star the official websites for your favorite football teams, you might see those results right at the top of your next search for [nfl]. Here’s what the new “Starred results” feature looks like:

Try Google Docs

Have you decided to make the transition to google, but have not completely gone?  Perhaps you’d like more guidance on the technical, marketing or training details? Or maybe you could use some resources to help you deploy?

Did you know you can sign up for a Deployment Training Webinar.  In this live session, a deployment specialist will walk you through the deployment planning steps and use cases.

People every day ask me why I am a “pro-google” person.  I honestly, would not call myself pro-google.  I like efficiency.   The last thing I need or have time for in my world is system crash.  Just last week, I received a phone call from a dear friend that had spent an entire weekend working on a presentation that her superiors wanted.  She, at the last moment, decided to not back up.   At the most inopportune times Window will decide to crash on you.  Lost are your files.  Unrecoverable are your files.  Data missing…your files.

I asked my dear friend, “Why dear friend are you not using Google Docs?”  She answered, “Google Whats.”  I go on to explain for over a half hour that Google docs is an online tool through google that you can create anything you need and it is compatible with Windows products.

I ask you now to take a spin.  Try it out.   Avoid system crash!

Google takes search real time

Google upped the relevance factor of its search results today with the launch of a new real-time feature that integrates live updates from blogs, news sites, Twitter, Facebook, and more.

Now, when you enter a search term like Golden Gate Bridge into Google, you’ll not only get results from across the web, you also get the option of checking out a real-time stream of what people are saying about the bridge right that minute in the news and blog posts, or on popular social networking sites like Twitter and FriendFeed. Besides the obvious coolness factor, the new feature makes it possible to get news related to your search term almost the instant it happens instead of waiting hours or days for web sites to get indexed.

This is a pretty awesome way to find out about breaking news or what people are saying about the latest blockbuster film. Imagine hearing about a traffic jam on the bridge right from passengers who Tweet about being stuck in traffic, or getting the skinny on movie reviews as people talk about it on FriendFeed. It’s basically integrating what we like best about Twitter directly into Google.

Google Adds GPS-Like Function to Search

Google gets better by, “Matching your IP address to a broad geographical location allowing a worldwide rollout of local search results on a map, which will now appear even when you don’t type in a location. When you search on Google, we will guess where you are and show results near you.  We try to make our guesses as good as they can be so that whether you’re shopping for [groceries], [sporting goods] or [flowers], or looking for your [bank], your [gym], or the [post office], you can just say what you want, and we’ll try to find it right where you are.”

You can also change your search location if needed to be more specific.

I had to play around with this new feature, and I opened google and typed restaurants.  Now its a pretty vague term….  but it produced:

A.
Champion’s Sports Bar & Restaurant
- www.championsboston.com – (617) 279-6996 – 729 reviews
B.
Sheraton Newton Hotel

J.
Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant
- www.johnnyds.com – (617) 776-2004 – 52 reviews

All restaurants local to my general area!  I did the same with my next search.  I typed nothing but “spa”, and was rewarded with:

A.
Beaucage Salon & Spa
- www.beaucage.com – (617) 437-7171 – 64 reviews
B.

I.

J.
Exhale Spa
- www.exhalespa.com – (617) 532-7000 – 24 reviews

What a great tool.  Now I wonder how this is affected if you are looking it up via smart phone?  I will have to try that later!  For now, it is like a little game…  looking up the most obscure generic terms, and seeing what results shows up in my general area.  Pretty cool!  Now it’s not perfect, but it’s almost like having GPS built in to your computer!  Since you can change your location at any time with a click, you’re still saving time and simplifying the search process.
