You will rarely in your life, career, and adulthood get the opportunity to work on a project that makes you feel good.  It has happened a few times in my life.  I once helped to rebuild a house that had a severe fire, and displaced an elderly couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.  It became my pet project.  The woman who’s house it was had severe Alzheimer’s, and kept trying to re-enter the burning house.  Having had experience with situations like this, I made distracting her my responsibility for the evening… and for the rest of the 8 month rebuild.   Watching her leave the nursing home and go back to a home she knew, was priceless.

The second came while working with a company in Massachusetts that did projects for the Toys for Tots Foundation.  I think I may have taken this more seriously than most of my colleagues.   My lead programmer, my graphic designer and I all took working with Toys for Tots extremely serious.  Knowing that what we did directly affected the children and their ability to have a happy holiday was scary to say the least.  It allowed me to grow in so many ways… leading me to my latest project.

Almost 5 years ago some amazing women worked very hard to bring me 2 beautiful puppies from Kentucky that were rescued from a shelter just moments before they were going to be gassed.   Being from Massachusetts where young puppies are not killed for lack of space,  I couldn’t believe they had almost died!  When they arrived, both were very sick.  The shelters had abused them, and one of my babies needed thousands of dollars of medical treatments.  Having only ever had purebred dogs prior to this, I knew nothing about animal rescue or how it works.  All I knew was that my children fell in love with the pictures of these puppies, and they needed to be here.

People drove 100 miles each and donated their time to get them from Kentucky to Massachusetts.  People I had never heard of, and have never heard from since……… all to save a dog.  I couldn’t believe it!

Little did I know that what they brought my family was the most incredible gift they could ever have given us. My dogs are loving, and so extremely well behaved that even the strongest cat lovers love my dogs.  When I was fighting cancer, my dogs never left my side.  When I cried they laid with me, and gave me silent comfort.  When I laughed, their eyes sparkled with a silent support of, “There ya go mom!”.  When my children came down with the flu and were to sick to come and get me, my dogs rushed into my room with feverish eyes saying, “Panic, Panic mommy… come quick!”.  They follow me everywhere.  They have chewed my 500.00 shoes when they were puppies, and one even ate a brand new Chanel bag that was only hours old.   Was I mad?  I was IRATE!  Later, when I cried over my purse, my Teddy Bear came over with such pain in her eyes I swear she knew what she had done… and has never done it since.

I have now heard that these amazing ladies are having some issues with donations and have had to put a hold on the animals they save.  So many lives being wasted because they do not have the money to get the animals out and the care they need.   I recently helped the create a website and donated it to them to help gather funds to help.   I am asking anyone looking for an animal to check out their website and see if they have an adoptable animal you fall in love with.   Did my story touch a place in your heart?  Did you have an animal that you cried on as a child, rode its back as a baby, or loved as an adult?  How about a donation in their memory!  For just $25.00 these women can feed and house a saved puppy for weeks!   Can’t afford $25.00, that’s okay!  Any amount helps and they are a 501c3 non-profit so it is tax deductible!
